What Caregivers Need to Know About Astigmatism

According to the National Eye Institute, approximately half of all adults over the age of 20 have visual refraction errors. Astigmatism is one of the most common of these errors. The disorder falls under one of two categories. Individuals either have corneal astigmatism or lenticular astigmatism. Following is everything Orlando in-home care agencies can tell you about this disorder.

Astigmatism Symptoms

  • Visual blurring or distortion
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Frequent headaches
  • Excessive squinting
  • Eye strain
  • Frequently closing the eyes

Corneal Astigmatism

The cornea refers to the clear tissue layer that covers the front of the eye. The tissue acts as a barrier against damage or infection. The transparent layer is also perfectly curved in order for light passing through the pupil to reach the retina at one designated point. If the cornea is uneven, the light refracts or bends abnormally. The light ray then divides and contacts the retina in two places, which causes blurred or otherwise distorted vision. Some people are born with imperfect corneas. The problem can also develop due to injury, certain types of surgery or from a degenerative disorder known as keratoconus.

Lenticular Astigmatism

The lenticular disorder occurs from an abnormal curvature of the lens. The condition is often seen in diabetic patients whose blood sugar levels remain too high for an extended length of time. High blood sugar has the potential to alter the shape of the lens. This type of astigmatism develops slowly. However, once diabetes is properly diagnosed and treated, the lens returns to its former shape. If a diabetic patient notices visual changes before starting treatment, they should wait for at least one month after treatment begins before getting or changing an eyewear prescription. This allows sufficient time for the abnormality to subside on its own.

Astigmatism Detection

The anomaly is typically detected during a routine eye examination. Seniors who notice visual changes should have an evaluation. Correction may include glasses, certain types of contacts or Lasik surgery.
